Welcome to the 2017-18 School Year

Welcome back to the 2017-18 school year at the New Open World (NOW) Academy.  Another amazing school year is upon us and with it comes plans for an exciting year full of enriched academic curriculum and activities.  Please know that my staff and I are once again, ready to begin the fall semester with renewed energy.  As we continue to move forward, please know that we believe in a collaborative process shared by students, parents, and faculty, so that all students achieve academic success. Understanding this, please remember when you have questions and/or concerns regarding your child, please discuss them with your child’s teacher first.  If you need further clarification, Ms. Lara, Mr. Ortiz, and I are available to assist you.  However, please know, as we open this school year, I will be out on a temporary medical leave and Mrs. May Arakaki, is serving as the Interim Principal in my absence.  She is very experienced and avialble to support our school community.

As you may recall, three years ago we participated in the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) accreditation process and received a six-year K-12 accreditation, which officially validates our school until 2021 with a mid-cycle review this Spring.  During this process, we created three specific goals for our school: 1) English Language Arts and Mathematics Proficiency for all 2) Reclassification and proficiency of English Language Learners and 3) 100% Graduation from High School.  Last year, we worked collaboratively with all stakeholders and maintained our gains in ELA and Math as measured by the Smarter Balance Assessment (SBAC), 16.2% of our English Learners reclassified totaling 36.7% over that last two years, and substantially increasing our graduation rate by 14% with 94% of our students graduating on time.  This growth is awesome; however, there is still work to be done and I look forward to continuing to work with each of you in order to ensure a safe and successful school year as it continues to be my goal, as well as the entire NOW Academy staff, to work extremely hard to provide a rich educational experience for all of our students.

Please understand that my staff and I will continue to provide a rigorous standards-based instructional program by teaching to the California Common Core Standards.  By doing this, we will continue to provide your child with the curriculum, knowledge, and skills necessary for success, and to high school graduation and on to college.  I firmly believe that these standards, along with self-discipline and personal experiences, will encourage lifelong success.  Therefore, your child will be expected to continue to follow the school’s discipline policy that ensures a positive educational climate for all learners.  In order to maximize student achievement, all students are expected to adhere to our expected behaviors: Be Safe, Be Respectful, and Be Responsible. Please discuss our behavioral expectations with your child and keep your copy for referral throughout the year.

Additionally, I’d like to remind you how important daily attendance is to your student’s success.  Please schedule family vacations during the one-week break in November, the three weeks at winter, or the one-week in spring.  Please remember that vacations taken on instructional days may have a negative impact on your student’s academic performance and achievement.  Our students cannot afford to miss school for any reason except illness.  Our school funding, as well as student achievement, are dependent upon students being at school on time every single day.

Our regular Secondary (6th - 12th Grades) school hours are 8:00 am – 3:15 pm Tuesday through Friday and beginning Monday, August 21, 2017, all students are dismissed at 1:25 pm on Mondays. Our Elementary (Transitional Kinder - 5th Grades) school hours are 8:30 am - 3:00 pm Tuesday, through Friday and beginning Monday August 21, 2017, all elementary students are dismissed at 1:25 pm on Mondays as well. Thank you for your continuous support and we look forward to spending this year working closely with each of you.  If you have any additional questions, please contact our school’s office at (213) 480-3725 or (213) 480-3700.

Dr. Charles D. Smith, Principal
